America

Haiti and why media coverage of tragedies sucks!

Recently I have begun advocating for a new approach to media output. I would like to see a media that is focussed on looking at solutions, rather than just regurgitating scary and titillating images and statistics (or sometimes speculation, rumours and misinformation) which don’t help the people/situation being discussed and leave those watching, reading or [...]

Happy Martin Luther King Day and why we must keep on dreaming

Happy Martin Luther King day! I wrote a piece for The Guardian – “King dream meets Obama’s reality” - on Obama’s first year in office and what it means for Martin Luther King’s vision for America.
The crux of the piece is that one person cannot singlehandedly change everything, particularly in the space of one year. We [...]

How to eliminate inequality in the world + create empowerment, dignity and equity for all

Wow, it’s December already. I haven’t blogged for a couple of months. I’ve been writing away, but just not blogging. All of that is changing, however, and I’m going to be blogging at least 3 or 4 times a week.
This year has been a great year so far, and as I’ve written about previously, I’ve [...]

I’m now writing for TheGrio.com

As you can see, I’ve been pretty busy! I’m now also writing for TheGrio.com – a newly launched website targeted at African Americans. The site features incisive, thought-provoking, and insightful commentary.
Here are some recent-ish pieces of mine:
Is Clinton’s visit to Africa about power or partnership?
Beer summit looks great, needs more filling
What we need to [...]

I’m back again!

I’ve been away on a hiatus… but I’m back in force. I must admit that I have been sucked into the abyss that is Twitter (follow me!) and am just dragging myself out. There really is something to be said for micro-blogging.
In any case, I have still been writing. So here are some pieces for [...]

How to hold Obama accountable

I have been accused of being an Obama butt-kisser. Apparently I am not critical enough of him.
There have been some people, especially in the black community, who feel that it is their duty to criticize the president at every turn. This, they believe, keeps him ‘accountable’ and helps him to do his job properly. Except [...]

Obama’s Cairo speech: America & Islam look to the future, together

Embedded video from CNN Video

As you can see, I thought the speech that Obama gave in Cairo (which is in Africa by the way, not the Middle East) was excellent. President Obama clearly realizes that in order to create something new, in order to transform a situation, you have to start from a place of [...]

Sonia Sotomayor: How can you judge her when you don’t know what she said?

In life, the context is decisive. That is, things only truly make sense based on the context within which they are said. If you don’t know the context to something you cannot accurately understand it. It’s really that simple.
People are still banging on about Sonia Sotomayor’s comments infering that she is biased/prejudiced/racist for saying that [...]

Is Sotomayor pick a bad case of identity politics?

I have a lot to say about Sotomayor and the whole ‘identity politics’ debate.  Personally I think the whole ‘identity politics’ argument is BS and I wish her all the very best.
For now, watch me debating the issue on CNN. A post on identity politics is to come…

Malcolm X: Born May 19th 1925

Yesterday, May 19th, would have been Malcolm X’s 84th birthday.
I have a few comments to make about the relevance of some of Malcolm X’s theories in this day and age, but for now I just want to salute him for what he contributed to the world.
And here’s one of his most powerful speeches:
